Are Audits Needed When Implementing ISO 42001?
Yes, and with pretty much any other standard.
Audits are often conducted before you implement or plan for a standard. Then, in the middle of the process, and the final audit before certification.
While they seem unnecessary, audits allow you to understand your company and what you need to change for compliance, but without sacrificing parts of the systems you like and could, instead, adapt more.
The audits that are run in the middle of the process are mostly for those who are a bit stuck in how to proceed. ISO 42001 is a particular case because you need to know if your AI governance policies and their implementation are good being handled properly.
The final one is more on the mandatory side as you get to define everything, make sure compliance was achieved, and apply for certification. This will save you time, resources, and prevent any rejection that puts your company in jeopardy.
